From back country roads to major interstate highways, driver safety continues to be an important part of everyday life; from the standard safety features in our cars to the potentially unnoticed technological advances of the roadway surfaces and pavement markings that guide us home. Many factors can impact driving conditions. From surface wear such as potholes and worn markings, to weather conditions and traffic, to our cars’ very own tires and brakes impact our ability to drive safely; and for motorists, few of these factors are truly controllable.
We also know that even when all conditions are in our favor, distracted driving is a leading cause of roadway accidents across the nation.
It is for these reasons that the mission of HOG is to build the best, safest and most efficient road and runway maintenance equipment in the industry. HOG designs, builds and supports specialty vehicles for road and runway maintenance with a safety-in-innovation mindset. At HOG, we know the least safe place for pavement maintenance workers is on the road. With all our trucks, in addition to innovations in efficiency and ease of use (which brings value from a productivity perspective), we also design them to be operated from the cab or from the safety of the truck body, with little or no need for support from men or women on the ground.
HOG’s flag ship Stripe Hog water blasting system is built on a platform of an ultra-high pressure water pump and equally effective positive displacement vacuum recovery to perform tasks such as road retexturing, marking cleaning and marking removal to prepare for new marking application. This is all done from the safety of the cab with joystick control for precise and effective water blasting work.
In addition to line removal, HOG builds an innovative fleet of trucks for thermoplastic, water-based paint or epoxy line application. HOG has disrupted this market with its patented lateral-kettle designs which relocate the material from high above the chassis to within the operator deck-space to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity and more evenly distribute the material weight along the chassis for a smoother and safe ride.
HOG also builds the Rumble Hog and Grinder Hog systems. These systems bring added safety right to the roadway long after the HOG goes home. Rumble strips, both traditional and sinusoidal (wave pattern rumble strips that provide less outside audible noise, but the same interior vibrations), provide clear indication to distracted motorists when they leave the lane of travel; this technology has been proven to reduce accidents. As a supplement to the audible noise projected when a motorist makes contact with the profile of both traditional and sinusoidal rumble strips, they provide enhanced reflectivity for the pavement marking as well. The driver gets a better view of the reflective surface as it more directly faces them on that upward profile cut. This is especially beneficial in poor weather conditions, and the cut itself even protects the marking from snowplows or other wear by being just below the pavement surface.
