Across North America and around the globe, one truth holds up no matter where the road takes you: if you don’t patch pavement properly the first time, you’ll be back again — wasting time, money and credibility.
In the pavement maintenance and preservation world, patching is often viewed as the “get in, get out” solution. A quick fix to hold things over until the budget loosens up or a major rehab can be scheduled. But here’s the kicker — a poorly executed patch job is more than just an eyesore. It can become a recurring problem, undermine surface treatments and ultimately shorten the life of your road.
That’s why proper patching isn’t just a best practice — it’s a responsibility. No matter what method you use — infrared, spray injection, hot mix, cold patch or mastic — you have to do it right. That means following OEM recommendations, understanding your state or local DOT’s specifications and applying sound judgment based on the conditions on the ground.
The Freeze-Thaw Factor: Asphalt’s Worst Enemy
Let’s talk about one of the most brutal forces our roads face: the freeze-thaw cycle. It’s the silent killer of flexible pavements.
When water infiltrates cracks or potholes and then freezes, it expands, putting pressure on surrounding material. Then it thaws, collapses and repeats. Over time, this process widens cracks, deepens potholes and accelerates the degradation of the entire pavement structure. If a pothole isn’t properly patched and sealed, the freeze-thaw cycle guarantees one thing — you’ll be back next season (if not next month).
In regions where freeze-thaw is constant — think Midwest, Northeast, Canada — proper patching before winter hits is critical. But even in places like Arizona or central California, thermal movement, stormwater infiltration and load-related stress create the same vulnerabilities.
Bottom line: every climate presents a threat to pavement longevity. Proper patching helps armor your investment, especially ahead of surface treatments.
Patching Is the Foundation — Literally — for Surface Treatments
It doesn’t matter if you’re prepping a high-volume interstate for a micro-surfacing treatment or getting a parking lot ready for a fresh sealcoat — if the base layer isn’t sound, your surface treatment won’t hold up. Period.
This is where I see a lot of agencies, contractors and even private property owners get it wrong. They’ll pay for a chip seal, micro-surfacing or fog seal to “make it look good again,” but skip the foundational work. If there’s a failing patch underneath — or worse, if there’s untreated structural damage — you’ve just put a Band-Aid on a broken leg.
The result? Your new surface fails prematurely, and the end user (whether it’s a DOT official, a commercial property manager or the average taxpayer) wonders why “that new road already looks like garbage.” The truth is, the surface treatment wasn’t the issue — the patching, or lack thereof, was.
Proper patching ahead of surface treatments isn’t optional — it’s essential. Think of it as prepping your canvas before applying the paint. If it’s cracked, wet, dirty or uneven, the finish won’t last.
Follow the Specs — They Exist for a Reason
Every OEM has patching guidelines for a reason. So do your local and state DOTs. Whether it’s the compaction requirement on a hot mix patch, temperature range for infrared blending or emulsion application rate for tack coat, specs are not suggestions.
Sure, they can be a pain to dig up and follow to the letter. But if your patch fails because you didn’t follow the process, you can’t blame the machine, the product or the weather. And you sure can’t bill it back.
Most manufacturers, including those of infrared systems, hot boxes or kettle-based patchers, are happy to walk customers through setup, usage and best practices. Many even offer training or on-site support. So, use the resources available — not just to stay compliant, but to protect your reputation and ensure you’re delivering a patch that lasts.
The Right Tool for the Job
Let’s be real. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to patching.
• Cold patch might be the only choice in extreme winter conditions, but it should never be your permanent fix.
• Hot mix is the gold standard when placed and compacted properly, but availability and logistics are a challenge in remote or low-production areas.
• Infrared delivers seamless, thermally bonded patches without cold joints — and it’s gaining ground fast for utility cuts, alligator cracking and winter repairs.
• Spray injection systems are fast and efficient for rural or low-volume roads with heavy distress.
• Mastic patching is ideal for fatigue cracking and surface-level defects that don’t need full-depth repair.
Knowing which tool or technique to deploy is half the battle. The other half is actually using it correctly.
A Long-Term Mindset in a Short-Term World
Here’s the truth: our industry is under constant pressure to do more with less. Budgets are tight, schedules are tighter and the pressure to show visible results (fast) can be overwhelming.
But that can’t be an excuse for sloppy work.
Patching is the gateway to preservation. It’s the keystone in the arch. If we fail at patching, we undermine everything that comes after — whether it’s a chip seal, micro surfacing, overlay or full reconstruction.
As someone who spends most of their time in the field, at conferences or talking with contractors and agencies across the country, I can tell you: the best operators take patching seriously. They treat it with the same precision and care they’d give to paving a runway or restoring a historic bridge. Why? Because they know the value of doing it right the first time.
Final Thoughts
In the pavement game, you only get one shot at a first impression. A failed patch is a black eye — not just on the road, but on your crew, your company and the entire preservation strategy.
So, whether you’re sealing a utility cut in suburban Ohio, repairing frost damage in the Rockies or prepping a city street in Sacramento for slurry seal — patch it right, or patch it twice.
That choice is yours.
