Aquaphalt’s water-activated formula makes pavement repair easier than ever.
It is estimated that more than 94% of the 2.7 million miles of paved U.S. roads are made of asphalt, not to mention all the parking lots, driveways and related surfaces made from asphalt and concrete materials. With all the traffic on them every day, it’s no surprise they’re in constant need of attention. When potholes show up, they don’t just make driving annoying—they can cause real damage to vehicles and create safety hazards.
Yet, the traditional solution — simply re-paving or repeatedly applying temporary cold patch isn’t doing anyone any favors. It’s expensive, it’s temporary, and it’s not great for the environment. That’s where Aquaphalt comes in — a product that’s changing how contractors, municipalities and even homeowners think about asphalt repair.
Aquaphalt is a permanent asphalt and concrete patch material manufactured in Orange County, Virginia and readily available in all 50 states and Canada. Aquaphalt’s target markets include Departments of Transportation (DOTs), pavement maintenance contractors, utility and site contractors, municipalities, government agencies, property management firms, facility managers, airports, schools, or anyone that has asphalt and concrete they need to maintain. Readily available, Aquaphalt is offered through distributors which range from national chains like Ace Hardware and Lowe’s, to regional construction/pavement supply companies. For business-to-business professional customers, Aquaphalt has the unique opportunity to support their businesses as a brand partner on a national level.
Our Background
Aquaphalt’s story begins in Europe. Known there as Rephalt, it was developed by Vialit Asphalt Company in Austria more than 30 years ago for patching the Autobahn. In 2008, Vialit teamed up with S.L. Williamson Company in Charlottesville, Virginia to bring the product to the U.S. under a new joint venture, RoadStone Production, LLC. Today, RoadStone is the exclusive U.S. manufacturer of Aquaphalt.
Our First Tests
Aquaphalt’s first real test run was with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) back in 2008—and it was obvious right away that we had something different on our hands. The material poured directly out of the container, only needed a splash of water from a hose or bucket, and started hardening almost immediately once tamped down.
Everyone who tried it was struck by its simplicity—and more importantly—its true permanence. It was a dramatic alternative to the widespread “standard cold patch malaise” plaguing maintenance crews nationwide.
Robert E. Fair Jr. with VDOT/NoVa District, Bridge Maintenance agrees. “Using Aquaphalt makes operations go smoothly because we don’t have to keep sending crews back and forth temporarily filling the same area. It’s the only thing we’ve found that we can throw into a hole and stay there, rain or shine.”
Disrupting the “Same Old Way of Doing Things”
For decades, maintenance crews have gotten used to the idea that cold patch is supposed to be inexpensive, low-quality, and short-lived. You fill the same pothole multiple times a year and accept it as part of the job.
Rising labor costs make repeat repairs increasingly inefficient. Historically, crews would apply temporary cold patch, only to return later with hot mix and full paving equipment. With Aquaphalt, the repair is done right the first time—no large crews, no special tools, no return visits.
“Aquaphalt has revolutionized the asphalt repair market,” says Blair Williamson, President and CEO of Aquaphalt. “We have created a new category of permanent, water activated patch material. Bringing Aquaphalt to the North American market has been an incredible opportunity.”
Yes, Aquaphalt costs more upfront. However, the product has quickly proven that its long-term savings in labor, repeat mobilization, and repeat material costs make it a very smart investment. You don’t have to redo repairs every spring or fall; the long-term savings are impossible to ignore.
Why Aquaphalt Works Better
Aquaphalt is the only permanent cold patch repair product on the market. It contains no VOCs, no harmful petroleum, and it sets up with just water. It’s safe for the environment, safe for workers and pets, and it works in wet conditions, extreme heat or freezing temperatures. You can even use it in snow and ice.
The best part? You don’t need a big crew or fancy equipment. Just pour it in, add water, tamp, and you’re done.

Our Philosophy
We focus on one product, and we work hard to make it the best. Because we only make Aquaphalt, quality control means everything to us. There is no backup plan and no second product line to lean on. If Aquaphalt isn’t excellent, we aren’t doing our job. Which is why we’re the only repair material that offers a 3-year warranty.
Looking Ahead
As a family-owned company, our goal is steady, thoughtful growth. We want to keep expanding our distributor network and get Aquaphalt into the hands of more people who need a truly permanent, environmentally friendly solution. And we do that with a team that’s fully invested in helping customers in their regions.
“Selling a best-in-class product doesn’t feel like work,” says Michael Wertheim, National Sales Director of Aquaphalt. “It feels like an opportunity to educate our customers on a way to make their jobs easier, safer, and far more efficient.”
With its growing reputation as the only permanent repair solution for asphalt and concrete, Aquaphalt isn’t just offering a better product—we are creating a whole new category of repair material. As labor costs continue to rise, it no longer makes sense to make the same repair two, maybe three times. With Aquaphalt, you can make a proper repair the first time – just one time – and you don’t need to mobilize a paving crew or any large equipment.
By offering a product that lasts and supports greener, more sustainable practices, we’re proud to help make America’s roads better—one repair at a time.
